 abstract={What did the dramatic 20th century look like in a small community on the outskirts of Silesia? Lubawka and its surroundings twice served as a base for world wars. These conflicts had a huge impact on them. First, the social and private life of the town was weakened, and after 1933 it was destroyed. The central caesura here is the year 1945 and the incorporation of Lubawka into Poland. A new era has come, which was created by new residents, settled here after the expulsion of the Germans. New, different forms of life were created. The local area experienced the advent of democracy twice (after 1918 and after 1989), and twice its existence under totalitarian conditions (Nazism and Stalinism). A characteristic feature of the whole century was repeated economic crises. The life of this part of Lower Silesia took place in the shadow of the border. Until 1938 it divided two hostile states: Czechoslovakia and Germany. After 1945, it isolated Poland and Czechoslovakia, two "popular democracies". Favourable changes occurred after the fall of communism in 1989, but economic problems are still being felt.},
