The idea for writing a book combining the analysis of two different institutions of a prison and a school came from the fact that the 21st century brings general disappointment with the institution of the penitentiary, but also the school. According to the common opinion, these institutions are ineffective. Hence, their fundamental changes are postulated. The juxtaposition of the prison and school shows that total institutions can have a diverse character and can serve different purposes. In fact, totality is not an evil in itself, aslong as it can be regarded as consistent with the principle of proportionality. Therefore, individual restrictions must lead to the achievement of the goals for which a given institution was established. When examining the totality of two selected institutions - a prison and a school - attention was paid to the "clear" sides of the examined institutions (eg the rights of the convict, the rights of the student)."]
